O pacote é xserver-xorg-video-intel-hwe-16.04
e já deve estar instalado por padrão.

A coisa é que eu descobri que nem tinha um driver intel instalado em primeiro lugar, como você pode ver no meu post aqui , quando tentei mudar para modesetting. Modesetting foi ativado desde o início, eu não tive que mudar ...
Então, tentei voltar para o antigo driver xserver-xorg-video-intel para ver se isso corrige o problema de distorção ...
Recebi as seguintes mensagens quando tentei instalar:

O que devo fazer agora? É um mistério total porque eu não tenho o driver da Intel instalado, mas sim o modesetting; isso não aconteceu quando eu usei Mint, por padrão eu tinha Intel e depois mudei para modesetting ...
E agora isso!
Adicionado este parágrafo após a edição: encontrei este artigo que diz que modesetting foi habilitado por padrão para gráficos Intel Gen4 e mais recentes ...
