Sugiro executar sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get update para limpar os pacotes antigos que estão no seu sistema e atualizar as fontes. Então instale o programa.
Eu tentei instalar o mysql-client-core * via apt-get no ubuntu 14; mas foi falha.
O seguinte é meu sistema operacional:

Se eu usar: apt-get install mysql-client-core-5.6 ou mysql-client-core-5.5, pode instalar com sucesso, mas não conectar o servidor mysql.
mysql -h127.0.0.1 -uxxx -pxxx

Espero instalar o mysql-client-core-5.6 do que o mysql-client-core-5.5.
