Mas não consegui ver ou escolher ou adicionar nenhuma conexão wifi

Verifique o conteúdo do seguinte arquivo por meio do comando terminal:

sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

Deve ser algo como:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

a menos que você tenha outros serviços em execução relacionados a redes como hotspot ou qualquer outro.
