Você tem drivers proprietários ativados?
Após uma atualização para o meu Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS de 32 bits hoje, minha placa sem fio não é mais notada. É uma Broadcom, usando o driver deles.

Ethernet ainda funciona.
Voltando a um Ubuntu anterior resolve temporariamente o problema.
Meu computador é um laptop Dell XPS antigo (2008). Eu nunca tive nenhum problema sem fio até hoje.
Seguir as instruções mostradas não resolveu o problema:
