Não deixe o Pulse Audio aberto por mais de alguns segundos. Então o microfone continuará funcionando. Você pode fechar o Pulse Audio e depois reabri-lo, desde que não permita que ele seja executado para > 5 segundos.
No meu Mythbuntu 12.04.2 HTPC, meu microfone USB (Logitech AK5370) funciona por alguns segundos e depois para de produzir sinal de entrada de áudio. O sistema reconhece lá, apenas fica mudo. Isso acontece em todas as portas USB. Funcionou bem durante meses.
Estou confiante de que não é o hardware porque o microfone funciona bem com o Win7 e também em outros computadores.

A reinstalação do Mythbuntu é impraticável.
Eu tentei consertar a esta questão (alterando as configurações do gstreamer ) mas não funcionou.
Após cada alteração, o microfone funcionaria como visto no Pulse Audio Volume Control por alguns segundos, depois o "nível" no nível pegou nos poucos segundos em que parou de funcionar.
Instalei o Audacity para monitorar o nível de entrada do microfone.
Com as configurações ALSA > padrão > AK5370: Áudio USB (hw: 1,0): Linha 0 o medidor de nível mostra o funcionamento do microfone.
Usando um "truque" dos velhos tempos, eu re-instalei o seguinte ...

Descobri que depois de fechar e reabrir o Controle de Volume de Áudio de Pulso, o nível de volume do microfone mostrará o microfone funcionando por alguns segundos, depois "congelando".
